Truly an amazing example of a time-capsule classic, this low-mileage, one (1) owner, 1981 Mercedes Benz 380SL Roadster, retaining its original Signal Red (568) exterior and Palomino MB-Tex interior, and is now offered for sale for the first time in 42 years. The model was described by one automotive journalist as having, “a heady mix of V-8 power, refined luxury, and sporty underpinnings.” First introduced in 1980, the 380SL provided discriminating owners with a roadster that was both luxurious and powerful. Delivered by Jim Slemons Imports Mercedes-Benz of Newport Beach, California to its first (and only) owner in September of 1981, this 380SL Roadster has been driven approximately 16,412 miles. Always dealer serviced, records document each dealer visit since delivery. Due to its low mileage, excellent care, and optional Paint Coat Preservation (524) the paintwork remains original and pristine. The CARFAX indicates no accidents or incidents.
Finished in its original color of Signal Red, its brilliant hue is complemented by pin striping, chrome trim, fog lights, a passenger rearview mirror, and a black fabric top. 14” chrome Bundt chrome wheels are fitted with Hankook Optima H724 All Season tires. A Signal Red removable hardtop is also included.
The Palomino MB-Tex interior features climate control, electric windows, green tinted heat-insulating glass, a central locking system, and a Becker Grand Prix AM/FM/Cassette radio with an automatic, power antenna.
The 3.8L eight-cylinder V-8 engine generated 204 Hp @ 5250 rpm with 232.33 lb.-ft. torque @ 3250 rpm. Although 380SL had a smaller displacement engine than the 450SL, it produced only 26 HP less and was nearly 120 pounds lighter. A new 4-speed automatic transmission directed power to the rear wheels. The car featured a fully independent suspension and 4-wheel disc brakes. Overall, the 380SL was a lively performer.
Included in the sale of this extraordinary 1981 Mercedes Benz 380SL is a clear California title, extensive service documentation, an original plastic holder for dealer supplements, an owner service and warranty booklet, an owner's manual, a consumer information booklet, and an original maintenance booklet.
